What are Mood Swings?

Mood swings refer to sudden, unexpected shifts or changes in one's emotional state or mood. We all experience fluctuations in our moods and emotions from time to time. However, some people experience more extreme, frequent, or intense mood swings that can significantly impact their day-to-day functioning.

Some key things to know about mood swings:

  • They can vary in severity and duration - some mood swings may last a few hours while others can last a few days or longer
  • Possible causes include hormonal changes, stress, sleep disturbances, drug/alcohol use, medical conditions, and major life events
  • Common symptoms can include feelings of sudden sadness, irritability, anxiety, euphoria, apathy, etc.
  • When severe or long-lasting, mood swings can negatively impact relationships, work performance, and overall wellbeing

So what exactly causes mood swings? There are a few potential culprits:

  • Hormonal changes - Fluctuations in hormones like estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol can trigger mood swings. This is why conditions like PMS, perimenopause, and menopause often come with mood instability.
  • Stress - High stress levels can take a major toll on our emotions. Stressors like work pressure, financial/relationship issues, grief and trauma can leave us feeling emotionally volatile.
  • Medical conditions - Thyroid disorders, diabetes, dementia, Parkinson's disease, and autism, among others, are linked to mood instability.
  • Medications - Antidepressants, steroids, and blood pressure medications may also cause mood fluctuations as side effects.
  • Sleep issues - Insufficient or interrupted sleep often manifests as irritability, anxiety, sadness, and other mood issues the next day.
  • Substance use - Withdrawal from or abuse of alcohol, recreational drugs, caffeine, etc., can trigger everything from anxiety and depression to euphoria and mania.

The good news? There are ways to stabilize your mood despite potential triggers:

  • Stress management techniques
  • Getting enough sleep and exercise
  • Maintaining a healthy diet
  • Therapy and medication if an underlying condition exists
  • Support groups to help cope with life stresses

By being aware of causes and implementing some of these lifestyle measures, it may be possible to find relief from extremely disruptive mood swings. But do speak to your doctor if swings persist, or you're having trouble managing day-to-day. Getting the right treatment can help get you back on an even keel!
